We were tasked with transforming two electric London buses into “Ambu-buses,” specially equipped to transport Covid-19 patients to hospitals across the city.

The Project

The project involved converting two single-decker buses, owned by Go Ahead, into mobile ambulances capable of carrying four patients at a time. To protect the privacy of NHS staff, St John’s Ambulance volunteers, and the patients onboard, Links Signs was asked to install special “blockout” vinyl to the bus windows. This vinyl ensures that the interior of the buses remains private, safeguarding the dignity and security of those inside during their journey.

Inside the buses, seats were removed to make space for essential medical equipment and oxygen supplies, transforming the vehicles into temporary ambulances. These Ambu-buses now play a vital role in transporting patients from hospitals such as Guy’s Hospital and King’s College Hospital to the Nightingale Hospital at the ExCeL Centre in London.

Rapid Turnaround

Given the urgency of the situation, a quick turnaround was essential. Links Signs received the enquiry from Transport for London on January 12, 2021, and by January 15, 2021, our fully trained and accredited team had installed the necessary graphics. This swift action ensured that the buses were ready to begin transporting patients just days later.

Project Details: Materials and Machinery

The choice of materials was crucial for this project, particularly in ensuring the privacy of patients and staff. Links Signs used:

  • Vinyl: Blockout vinyl from APS, chosen for its opacity and durability.
  • Laminate: A matt laminate was applied to further protect the graphics and ensure they would last throughout the duration of their use.
  • Printing: The graphics were printed using our in-house HP Latex 570 printer, known for its high-quality output and efficiency.

The graphics are expected to remain in place for at least six months, continuing to serve their purpose as the pandemic response evolves.

Conclusion

This project exemplifies the agility and expertise of Links Signs in responding to critical needs during challenging times. We are honored to have played a part in supporting the NHS and helping to protect the health and safety of Londoners during the Covid-19 pandemic. If you have a project that requires expert signage solutions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
