As the world grappled with the Covid-19 pandemic, Links Signs undertook a significant project for Unilex Signs of Cairo, producing over 400 vitreous enamel signs for the Cairo Metro Line 3 Extension.
The Challenge
The task was to manufacture a large suite of durable, weatherproof signs for the Cairo Metro Extension, connecting Attuba to Adly Mansour Metro Station. The signs needed to withstand Cairo’s extreme climate and heavy usage while maintaining legibility and durability over time.
Our Solution
Links Signs produced more than 400 vitreous enamel signs, including station names, directional and wayfinding signs, emergency signage, and PRM (Persons of Restricted Mobility) signs. Each sign was crafted from steel panels cut with precision using our in-house laser cutter, shaped to exact specifications, and then enamelled and fired in our on-site furnace. The resulting signs feature dark blue lettering on white or yellow backgrounds, ensuring clear visibility for passengers.
Why Vitreous Enamel?
Vitreous enamel was chosen for its unparalleled durability and resistance to extreme temperatures, making it ideal for Cairo’s harsh climate. This material not only withstands the elements for up to 25 years but also requires minimal maintenance due to its anti-static properties, which repel dust and dirt.
Challenges and Successes During Covid-19
Despite the complications of working during the Covid-19 pandemic, including communication challenges and operational restrictions, Links Signs successfully delivered the project. Careful planning ensured the safe packing, crating, and shipping of the signs via sea freight to Egypt, where they now serve as long-lasting navigational aids for Cairo Metro passengers.
Conclusion
This project highlights Links Signs’ commitment to delivering high-quality signage solutions, even in the face of global challenges. The Cairo Metro Extension signage not only meets the immediate needs of the transit system but also stands as a testament to the resilience and expertise of our team during unprecedented times.
